Impostor From Single View
In expansive 3D environments, rendering every distant model with complete geometry and textures from every viewpoint can be too resource-intensive. A common solution is the use of billboards or impostors - simplified 2D substitutes for 3D models that offer an efficient alternative.
Simplygon's Impostor From Single View feature provides a method to create these impostors, transforming a 3D model into a billboard by projecting it from a chosen viewing angle.
To generate an impostor with Simplygon, you select the target object and the desired viewing angle for the projection. You then specify the dimensions and resolution of the resulting billboard. Simplygon uses the selected angle to render the object and map the rendered image onto a texture, forming the impostor. This approach can be extended to multiple objects and angles, enabling the efficient creation of an impostor library for your project.
Impostors from a single view are particularly valuable for displaying distant entities in resource-constrained environments, as they reduce the object to its simplest geometry while maintaining visual fidelity at the intended view distance. For situations requiring the billboard to be visible from multiple directions, considering the Flipbook feature is advisable.
